Background of the study
Democracy, over the decades and around the globe, has been presented and seen as a requirement for national progress. The democratic goal of the African countries, in keeping with this view, is likewise concerned with the desire for progress. According to Egena (2015), nearly all the nations in Africa, given this view, throughout the previous two decades, have chosen democratic system of government . The idea, in view of this, is that progress among these African nations will favorably correspond with the democratic practice. Contrarily, however, African nations even under the democratic system of governance have remained to be defined by underdevelopment and profound poverty as opined by Gboyega (2019).
Intriguingly, the link between democracy and country growth is widely understood. This is because democracy plays a very vital and crucial role in creating effective governance and encouraging national growth. Said (2019) believes that the common trait of democratic government is its concentration on enhancing the socio-economic welfare of the people and this is identical with the notion of national development. Thus, the man and his quality of life remains the focus of notion of national development (Amucheazi, 1980).
Indeed, this is so to the point that most of the nations in the world designated by the United Nations (UN)as the least developed are among these African countries with democratic administrations. (See UN Human Development Index, 2019). Niccolo Machiavelli, proponent of Machiavellianism political theory characterised democracy in a way that has sparked disagreements among researchers in his book named “The Prince”. Machiavelli considered politics as fights, but not through a lens of morality, but as chess game with defined rules. His experience indicated that politics have always been played with deception, betrayal and criminality. Scholars have consequently claimed that the Machiavellian idea and practice of politics is a faulty interpretation since it does not represent politics in its real sense. The student believes that in order for Nigeria to experience development in all aspects, the spirit of the traditional idea of democracy should be embraced. This study seeks to examine the democratic experience in Nigeria from this vantage point, and seeing its manifestation in our political practise, the student makes this argument (Ogundowole 2018).
Bizarrely, when looking back at the democratic experience in Nigeria after 1999, it is necessary to consider whether or not democracy as a political philosophy has succeeded in delivering on its promises for the country. Democracy, as a form of political philosophy, is expected to fulfil the traditional roles of giving power to the people, encouraging the pursuit of the public good, and improving social order. However, the current democratic experience has offered nothing but economic and social issues, which have shown themselves in a high level of insecurity. This is the case despite the fact that democracy has existed for decades. The deviation in question works against the progress of the nation.
